Newport Central Catholic High School named Jeff Schulkens as its new Athletic Director for the 2019-2020 school year. With accepting this new role, Jeff has decided to step down as Varsity Boys’ Baseball Coach, a role he has held for twenty-four years.
Coach Schulkens shared, “I want to thank the many players I have had the opportunity to coach over the years as well as the current and former assistant coaches who greatly contributed to the NCC baseball program. I had the privilege of being affiliated with many wonderful people in the Northern Kentucky baseball world and beyond and for that I am thankful. In my role as Athletic Director, I look forward to the opportunity to work with all the NCC coaches and provide continued support to our student athletes.”
Jeff, a 1985 graduate of Newport Central Catholic started working at NCC as a part-time teacher and shortly thereafter became responsible for Business Administrative duties. He is currently the school’s Business Manager. He began coaching baseball as an assistant in 1994 and was named head coach in 1996.
Jeff was the first girls’ golf coach and has been the golf coach for the boys’ program since 1990.
Under Coach Schulken’s leadership, he led the Baseball Program to four Regional Titles - 1996, 2008, 2011, and 2012. In 2008, 2011, 2013, and 2017, the NewCath team won the 9th Region All A Title. In 2013, Newport Central Catholic captured the All A State Championship.
Coach Schulkens was named Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2008. He was inducted into the Kentucky High School State Baseball Coaches Association in 2018. In March of this year, he was inducted into the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.
NCC Principal Ron Dawn said, “Jeff has a tremendous work ethic and has been loyal to the Newport Central Catholic school community in various facets. He is a veteran here at NCC and has worn many hats over the years. Naming Jeff the Athletic Director will make for a smooth transition. He is familiar with the administrative duties and responsibilities of the Athletic Department and will continue to support our team coaches and student athletes in this new role.”
The process of hiring a new head baseball coach is underway.
