This project is made possible by a lead gift from one of our most notable Alumni Dave Cowens, 1966, and his family.

The gymnasium floor is the original from 1954 when the school was first constructed and is the surface for not only sporting events like volleyball and basketball, but also plays host to our spring musical, major fundraisers, school assemblies, all school masses, guest speaking engagements and so much more.

After breaking the school’s career rebound record at Newport Catholic, he went on to find successes in the NBA playing for the Boston Celtics.  He earned NBA Rookie of the Year in 1970-71 season, NBA MVP 1972-73, was a seven time NBA All Star and inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991.

The floor has seen so many memorable moments including the play of Dave Cowens.  After breaking the school’s career rebound record, he went on to find successes in the NBA playing for the Boston Celtics.  He earned NBA Rookie of the Year in 1970-71 season, NBA MVP 1972-73, was a seven time NBA All Star and inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991.

Cowens commented, "Jack and Ruth Cowens, like many other parents, dedicated hard earned, limited resources to providing their children with a good, Catholic education. Gary, Tom, Jerry and I went to Newport Catholic, sister Susan attended Our Lady of Providence Academy and oldest brother Wayne excelled at Covington Latin School. This gift is in honor of the sacrifices our parents made for us.”

Naming rights to the floor will belong to the Cowens family and will be placed on the floor.

Kenny Collopy, NCCHS Director of Institutional Advancement said, “We are very blessed to have alumni like Dave Cowens and his family who support our mission of educating young people in a Catholic environment. This new surface is a testament to the confidence our alumni have in our causes and their dedication to our students’ Catholic education.   This project will not only improve the experience of our community, but bring about a great excitement and momentum.”

The installation of the floor will take place immediately after the 2017-18 school year concludes and the entire process will take six to eight weeks.  Cincinnati Floor Company and Robbins Flooring will be providing the flooring, removal, and installation.

Collopy noted, “It is our intent to provide pieces of the floor for purchase.  Further details on this will follow as will specific designs of the floor.”

NCCHS is most grateful to the Most Reverend Bishop Foys, D.D. and the Diocese of Covington for the support of this project and to Dave Cowens, his family and others who support Newport Central Catholic.
